Here at Katie Peckett, we firmly believe that you don’t necessarily need any reason at all to send flowers to someone you love, or even buy them for yourself! Of course, there are plenty of reasons to celebrate with flowers, from weddings and anniversaries, to Birthdays and Valentine’s Day. Another great reason is International Women’s Day, and it’s becoming more and more common to send flowers as the day has become increasingly recognised across the UK.
What is International Women’s Day?
Taking place annually on March 8th, International Women’s Day is a focal point in the women’s rights movement and celebrated around the world. Despite origins in America, and subsequent adoption in Soviet Russia, the day was then taken up by the feminist movement in 1967, with the United Nations first celebrating the day in 1977. Celebration of International Women’s Day varies throughout the world, with some countries even treating it as a public holiday.
The UN theme for International Women’s Day this year is “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”, and is set to highlight and celebrate the impact that girls and women around the world have had as health care workers, caregivers, innovators and community organisers during the pandemic.
Celebrating International Women’s Day with Flowers
Often, women are given flowers and bouquets to show appreciation of them, as well as in support of gender equality. The mimosa flower (pictured) has a special significance for International Women’s Day, but there are many flowers that can be given on this day. In fact, a recent article in the New York Times reported that in Russia, flower shops sell upwards of 150,000 roses on March 8.
Sending flowers to the great women in your life is a lovely way to not only celebrate International Women’s Day, but also celebrate them. So, whether you want to show your appreciation for your wife, girlfriend, Mum, sister, co-worker, or friend, International Women’s Day is the perfect excuse!
