Musings of a Sheffield Florist – My Year in Flowers

One of my favourite things as a florist is appreciating the sheer variety of flowers that I am lucky enough to work with on a daily basis. As a well-established Sheffield florist, it’s such a pleasure to be able to offer my customers a wide range of quality seasonal flowers. We have lots of options available throughout the year, both through our flower shop and our Sheffield flower delivery service. Sustainably sourcing seasonal flowers from local growers is always a pleasure, and these are some personal favourites!

Sheffield florist peoniesWelcome Spring with Peonies

Peonies have enjoyed lots of attention recently as a beautiful, on-trend, spring bloom. There’s no wonder; their impressively large, often fragrant flowers can range from subtle dusky pinks and vibrant reds and purples, to more neutral shades of white and yellow. A personal favourite is the Paeonia lactiflora, which is the double flowered variety, consisting of lots of broad petals forming a large, bulbous flower that creates plenty of impact.

Sheffield florist AlstroemeriasA Summer of Alstroemerias

Alstroemeria, more commonly known as Peruvian lilies, are a popular choice for a fresh summer bouquet. Their delicate, exotic looking flowers are always a welcome addition to a colourful floral arrangement. Although alstroemeria don’t really have a scent, they’re really durable and last well. Unlike traditional lilies, they’re safe for dogs and cats too, making them a sensible choice for a pet friendly home.

Sheffield florist DahliasDaring Dahlias for Autumn

As the Autumn draws in, I must admit that I am naturally drawn to richer hues such as deep reds and burgundy, deep golden yellows, and warm coppery oranges. As part of the Asteraceae family, the Dahlia has distinctive symmetrical petal structures and comes in almost every colour you can imagine. Keeping with the Autumnal theme, the darker shades of this beautiful bloom are a great choice from late summer right through to the colder months.

Sheffield florist Christmas WreathWinter Classics for the Festive Season

As a regular holder of festive wreath making classes at our Sheffield flower shop, holly and ivy are a classic winter combination that never fails to get those warm, Christmassy feelings going! Seasonal foliage is always a winner at this time of year, and both holly and ivy are popular choices. A more traditional look can be achieved by adding other seasonal foliage such as berries and pinecones, or flowers can be added for a more colourful, vibrant look.
